Q: Does wearing perfume / water flower or smelling them invalidate i‘tikāf? What if it is done unintentionally?
A: If one smells pefume / water flower for pleasure,
a) He should by obligatory caution continue i‘tikāf up to the end and make it again as qaḍā if it is obligatory for him to perform i‘tikāf specifically during these days;
b) He should start i‘tikāf anew if it occurs during the first two days of i‘tikāf but he should continue it to the end and start it anew if it happened on the third day of i‘tikāf. The rules in this item is applied if it is obligatory for him to do i‘tikāf for some unspecified days;
c) In mustaḥabb i‘tikāf, he has no duty if it occurs during the first two days of i‘tikāf but he should start i‘tikāf anew if it occurs on the third day.
As far as the above-mentioned rules are concerned, it makes – by obligatory cation – no difference whether it is done on purpose or it occurs unintentionally.
