How to Making Property from Unlawful (Ḥarām) Capital Lawful (Ḥalāl)

Q82: What is the ruling for someone whose principal capital is entirely unlawful (ḥarām) and who wishes to make his property lawful (ḥalāl )?
A: If the owners of the unlawful (ḥarām) property are known, their consent must be sought.
If the owners are unknown or inaccessible, but the amount of the unlawful (ḥarām) property is known, it is treated as property with an unknown owner (majhūl al-mālik). The amount must be given as charity to a sharʿī poor person on behalf of the principal owners, and the recommended precaution (al‑iḥtiyāṭ al‑mustaḥabb) is that permission should be obtained from a fully qualified jurist (al‑ḥākim al‑sharʿī).
If neither the amount of the unlawful (ḥarām) property nor its owners are known, Khums must be paid on the entirety of the unlawful (ḥarām) capital and any resulting profits to make it lawful (ḥalāl).
